Conservation Achievements

At Kiunga Community Conservancy (KICOCO), we take pride in the collective impact we’ve made through our commitment to conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Here are some key highlights of our shared achievements:

Marine Conservation and Fishing Gear Exchange Program

  • We launched the innovative Kiunga Fishing Gear Exchange Program to eliminate illegal beach seine fishery from the reserve by 2025.
  • Together, we successfully exchanged illegal nets for sustainable fishing gear through community participation.
  • We have enhanced the capacity of fishing communities within the Kiunga Marine Protected Park.

Partnerships for Progress

  • We collaborated closely with stakeholders, including Kenya Wildlife Service, County Government, Kenya Forest Service, and Northern Rangelands Trust.
  • Our partnerships with organizations such as Kenya Red Cross, World Wildlife Fund for Nature, USAID, and The Nature Conservancy have been integral to our success.

Local Community Empowerment

  • We expanded the Fish to Market Enterprise Program ‘Ocean Work’ from 2 to 7 Beach Management Units (BMUs) in Kiunga and Pate conservancies.
  • We issued sustainable and legal fishing gears to replace illegal beach seine nets, supporting 176 local fishers.

Water Resources Management

  • We installed a solar-powered desalination plant in Kiunga village, producing 70,000 liters of fresh water daily in partnership with NRT and Give Power Foundation.
  • Utilizing rainwater harvesting, boreholes, and shallow wells, we have addressed water needs in the region.

Wildlife and Marine Conservation

  • We have managed to protected and conserve terrestrial areas with diverse wildlife, including endangered species such as lions, African wild dogs, and sea turtles.
  • Our initiatives in Marine Resource Conservation safeguarded unique habitats like coral reefs, sea grass beds, and nesting sites for marine turtles.

Ocean Plastic Collection and Recycling

  • The launch of ‘Bahari Moja Project’ for plastic collection and recycling, has contributed to cleaning up tons of plastic debris from nearby beaches.
  • Together, we collected and recycled 67.02 tons of ocean plastics since 2019, contributing to cleaner beaches and increased sea turtle nesting.
