Embracing Harmony: A Journey into Kiunga Community Conservancy

Welcome to the heart of Kiunga, where nature’s rhythm and the pulse of community life blend in a symphony of conservation. Nestled at the northernmost part of the Kenyan coast, Kiunga Community Conservancy is more than a sanctuary for wildlife; it’s a living testament to the harmonious coexistence of people and nature.

The Narrative of Kiunga

Kiunga Community Conservancy, initially established in 2013 as a Community-Based Organization and later evolving into a company limited in 2018, paints a vivid picture of sustainable development. The conservancy’s roots are firmly embedded in the soil of community engagement, where approximately 3,925 residents find their livelihoods in fishing, tourism, and subsistence farming.

Governed by a 13-member board, elected from the villages within the conservancy, Kiunga thrives on collaboration. Stakeholders such as the Kenya Wildlife Service, National Police Service, Kenya Forest Service, and the area chief sit alongside community representatives, shaping the conservancy’s path towards sustainable practices.

Guardians of Conservation

Meet the unsung heroes of Kiunga – the conservancy’s dedicated team of 24 staff, with 20 rangers leading the charge. Their commitment extends from daily wildlife monitoring to marine data entry, security patrols, and anti-poaching campaigns. Through their efforts, Kiunga safeguards its terrestrial areas, home to diverse wildlife, including endangered species like lions, African wild dogs, and elephants.

A clear Vision

At the heart of Kiunga’s journey is a clear vision: to improve the livelihoods of the community through conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The conservancy’s mission is a guiding light, emphasizing accountability, transparency, integrity, respect, and equity in all endeavors.
